On 5th December, Chancellor George Osborne announced, as part of his Autumn Statement, that the Government is committed to implementing the recommendations of the School Teachers’ Review Body (STRB) for "much greater freedom to individual schools to set pay in line with performance".

The STRB recommends that instead of pay increases based on length of service, Head teachers could use set pay “to reward excellence and performance improvement” based on teacher appraisals.

Academies already have freedom to set their own pay policies for teachers.

A chance for you to see the most popular poll topic of the month developed into a full investigation. We will build on the poll findings with evidence-gathering surveys designed to deepen our understanding of the experiences and expertise that underlie the opinions of our teachers.

Our current survey is investigating Teaching Schools.

An arena for you to engage in pro-active and productive discussions based on the findings from the polls and surveys. Discussions may be online or face-to-face and may generate recommendations for further research, for policy changes, or for the development of resources for teachers.

An opportunity to see the varied views of our teachers outlined in the investigation findings: from poll to survey, discussion to recommendation. Reports are shared with policymakers, influencers, and where relevant, the wider public. When possible, we include you in opportunities to discuss reports with policymakers.

Teachers and their unions:

LKMCo highlight final

A new report released by LKMCo explores what teachers think of their unions. It is based on polls, surveys and interviews with over 350 teachers, through surveys and interviews between January and June 2012.

The authors of the forward to the report, Laura McInerney and Loic Menzies, explain that they:

“see this report as an opportunity to bypass political distortion of what teachers do and do not think about unions and to actually ask them what they think. What are the thoughts, feelings and values behind their decisions to join, stay or leave a trade union?”
