What are the expectations on school staff working from home?
The Department for Education (DfE) has published guidance on the temporary closure of schools due to COVID-19.
The DfE explains it would expect school staff to continue to support the education of pupils, and wider work of the school, in appropriate ways agreed with their school leadership teams, but school leaders should be mindful of staff wellbeing and practical circumstances when designing these arrangements.
What should I do if I’m concerned with meeting expectations set by my school?
One of our caseworkers has provided the following practical advice. He explained that if school staff have concerns about what is expected of them the first course of action is to speak to their line manager or headteacher and ascertain what is expected of them before taking the necessary steps to work out how that might be achieved.
If there are potential barriers to meeting those expectations arrange another conversation to work out a way forward to which both parties agree.
If school staff are finding it difficult in the circumstances to arrange childcare, then schools may expect them to take time off for dependants. Time off for dependants leave is a statutory right which allows any employee to take reasonable time off to care for a dependant. This is however likely to be unpaid.
School staff may want to consider varying their hours of work to accommodate childcare in which case agreement will need to be sought to change their hours of work.
